Seeing a dietitian can help you improve your health for adults and children. Dietitian’s work with families to promote nutritional strategies to optimise a child’s cognitive and social development. Dietitians treat many chronic and temporary health conditions.
What do dietitians do:
- Educate clients and their families on proper nutrition and portion control
- Provide a personalised meal plan for a range of food, nutrition and medical concerns
- Assess and manage a range of paediatric feeding disorders
- Nutrition advice with special diets for those with swallowing or chewing impairments
- Dietary management of gastrointestinal disorders and food intolerances or allergies
- Assistance with fussy or picky eating or limited dietary intake
- Cooking and nutrition workshops for groups or individuals
- Guidance with menus and meal planning including education with carer or support staff
INDICATIONS THAT A PERSON MAY BENEFIT FROM DIETETICS
There are a wide range of triggers that may lead to a person benefiting from the support of a dietitian. Some typical reasons why someone might be referred, or might independently choose, to see a dietitian include:
- Adults or children that have suspected food allergies
- Signs that a chronic illness such as diabetes is not being managed such as increased Hba1c levels
- Significant weight loss or gain
- Recent poor food intake, poor appetite, or difficulty preparing or eating food
- Changes in medication
- Periodic reviews of medical nutrition therapy.
- Bariatric surgery
